If I were to describe the typical Boulder consumer looking for shoes, she would be attractive, fit, and wearing danskos. Boulderites LOVE their danskos. I think that they love them way too much, they might even be dependent on them! It’s not healthy the relationship that active Boulder women have with their comfortable shoes. (Keens, Danskos, J41s….)
Here’s a little secret about me. Actually before I tell you this, it is not a secret. All who know me I love fashion. I always have. At 5 years old, I started out my days wearing a bright pair of sparkly red Dorothy style flats. I worshiped those flat Mary Janes more than anything I could possibly have worshipped anything as a 5 year old. I danced in them, played at the playground in them, heck, I think I even slept in them. This was the start of my shoe fantasy, or should I say fanaticism. It didn’t stop there and it hasn’t stopped. In my high school days, when I made a solid income (thanks for the generous income I received at Victoria’s Secret) I would blow it on at least one pair of shoes a week. These shoes would vary from Michael Kors to Payless shoes.
“Cinderella is proof that a pair of shoes can change your life.”
Most people don’t live up to their shoe potential. What I mean by that is that most people can make themselves look dramatically better with shoes. Shoes can make someone more sophisticated, brighten up a room, and hell literally taller.
This describes why I started out at fashion school. I started out my Freshman year at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. I was there for Advertising, Marketing and Communications because I thought that I wanted to do fashion advertising. After my exposure to the fashion world, I can confidently say that I am more attracted to advertising in general and enjoy being fashionable and up to date on current fashion as a hobby, rather than a career choice. I actually think that fashion advertising lacks in the creativity that advertising for other product has. This obviously also has to connect to the structure of the agency that creates it. (Creative agencies are clearly very different than traditional ones.)
My love for shoes has clearly transcended my fashion school attending days. This is why I love the shoe store where I currently work, Two Sole Sisters. If I had to describe the store, I would say that it is a barbershop for women. Except the main difference is that instead of cutting hair, we sell shoes. We sell good shoes to. We sell shoes to women who count on us to bring in the most fashionable shoes, and to be their support systems. I have met so many different types of women at my store. Young, old, single, married. Some are students. Some just moved here. Some are yoga teachers. But they all love shoes. and handbags. and jewelery.
Because of the exposure I have to fashion with my shoe store, and the atmosphere, I am constantly updates on the newest fashions. I may spend all of my paychecks on shoes, but at least I get to meet Yoga teachers who teach at underprivileged schools. I am exposed to some of the most unique people in Boulder. We have this homeless guy who comes in ALL of the time and gives us his recordings. He is definitely an old Boulder hippie. Regardless, meeting him and listening to his stories is something that I have become grateful for because the ambiguity of our conversations always brighten my day.
